Words to live by: Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities,; all things were created by him and for him. Hmmm….all things. Ponder that for a few minutes.
Reading is my all-time favorite past time. I just love to to get lost in a good book. Getting to know and care about the characters and their lives. And sometimes, learning some historical facts.
The first book I want share with you is The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah
This was a pick for my book club. We seem to read a lot of books set during WWII. I was happy to see it chosen because I have been wanting to read it for awhile. It’s the story of two sisters who live very different lives in France. They each in their own way, help the war effort in very dramatic ways. One stays at home while her home is occupied by German soldiers. The other, through great personal risk, finds a way to smuggle downed RAF pilots to safely. I thought it was well written and put me right there in France during a heartbreaking time in history. It’s long at 607 pages, but well worth the time.
Next, is something completely different. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.
This is a light hearted, laugh out loud fun read! Don is a scientist who is ruled by schedule and routine who happens to be looking for a wife. So what does a scheduled scientist do to figure out who would be wife material? He makes a list. However the woman he begins to be interested in doesn’t match anything on the list. What to do? Read this book and laugh your booty off as you find out 🙂 This is a light an entertaining read. It’s a very quick 467 pages.
As I have mentioned in my earlier book reviews, I love the Mitford series by Jan Karon!!!
Come Rain or Come Shine is the 12th (12th!) book in the beloved Mitford series. The series begins with an Episcapalian, bachelor priest in the hills of North Carolina. It is such a tender story filled with real life characters who encompass all that is good, bad, and real in humanity. There is also the thread of the Gospel running through each story. In Come Rain or Come Shine, we finally are guests at the wedding of Dooley and Lace. This story, more than any other had me in tears of….what? Happiness? Longing? No. I think it was tears of pure joy. Lace and Dooley are ready to take on marriage, the veterinarian busisiness, the the farm, a bull and five heifers a new puppy and a special surprise. All of this comes at them at once and they credit God for His grace in preparing them for this journey. It is just so sweet. I have to say though, if you have not read the earlier books in the series( which I can’t recommend enough) , you might not get as much enjoyment out of it. It’s only 287 pages. You won’t be disappointed.
Lastly, I am offering up the latest book by the enormously popular and talented, Liane Moriarty, Truly, Madly, Guilty. Friends, I love Liane Moriarty!! I have read four of her earlier books and loved each of them.. I told my daughter that if Liane Moriatry wrote the phone book, I’d read it! She is just that good.
This is our latest book club pick. We actually chose it a week before it was even released! We all loved her earlier books and couldn’t wait to get our hands on this one. I downloaded it to my iPad the day it was released knowing we were headed out for mini vacation (more on that in a later post) and promptly forgot to bring my iPad on the trip! Aaaarrrgghh! Sooooo… I’ll get back to you on this one.
Today I am joining with some of my blogging buddies to bring you what I’ve been reading lately. If you would like some more reading inspiration, please feel free to check out their blogs too!
